Reasons for Minor Oral Surgery at one80 Dental

The oral surgeon has more than 25 years’ experience and provides treatment for a full range of jaw, face and mouth-based concerns. The most common reasons for oral surgery are:

  • Impacted wisdom teeth, which is when a wisdom tooth fails to fully emerge, causing swelling, pain and sometimes infection

  • Orthodontic exposures to help a tooth that has not yet fully erupted to relieve gum pain and help tooth alignment

  • Extraction of difficult crowded or misaligned teeth

  • Removal of buried roots and broken root fragments

  • Surgical endodontics (root canal treatment) to save incisors, canines and premolars

  • Jaw related problems, such as issues with jaw growth or TMJ dysfunction

  • Dental implant placement, bone augmentation or bone grafting

  • Facial trauma, such as fractured jaws or broken facial bones

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom tooth removal is one of the most common oral surgery procedures. They teeth are the last to appear and usually begin to come through in your late teens. Most people have four wisdom teeth, but it is not unusual to have fewer, or even none.

Because wisdom teeth are the last teeth to form, sometimes there isn’t room in your mouth for them. This means they might come through at an awkward angle, impacting the teeth in front or the bone behind.

If this happens, it’s likely that you’ll notice something is wrong because of the pain, so our priority will be to get you in for a scan to get a clear picture of what is happening underneath the gum line and assess how to safely remove the tooth.

Tooth Extractions

Where possible, we will always look to preserve your natural teeth but there are instances where an extraction is clinically necessary or highly recommended. This can include impacted teeth that have failed to erupt or only partially erupted, overcrowded teeth, badly damaged teeth that can’t be saved and infected teeth that pose a risk to your overall health.

Putting Your Comfort First

Oral surgery is a routine procedure and nothing to worry about.  Before treatment, your dentist will explain your treatment options and answer any questions that you may have. You may need local or general anaesthetic for your oral surgery.  If you are nervous or anxious we offer treatment under sedation.

Flexible Payment Plans

Surgical removal of wisdom teeth is frequently covered by your health insurance.

We also offer a range of flexible payment plans, with finance options starting at 0%, so that you can pay for your treatment in a way that works best for you.

Minor Oral Surgery FAQs

What is oral surgery?

Oral surgery includes various dental procedures performed on the teeth, gums, and jaw. Common types of oral surgery procedures include tooth extraction, wisdom tooth removal, dental implants and corrective jaw surgery.

What kinds of treatment might require oral surgery?

Our specialist team provide treatment for problems relating to the gums, jaws and face and can help patients with a huge range of concerns. Some of the most common treatments requiring oral surgery include:

  • Impacted wisdom teeth or other teeth that need removal.

  • Jaw alignment issues that require correction.

  • Missing teeth that need replacement with dental implants.

  • Gum or bone grafting.

  • Treatment of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders.

Is oral surgery painful?

Patients receive local or general anaesthetic, so the procedure itself is typically pain-free. Mild discomfort, swelling, or soreness after treatment is common and can be managed with pain management medications. At one80 Dental our dentists understand that many people are anxious about oral surgery so we can provide dental sedation to help you relax during treatment.

How long does recovery take after oral surgery?

Recovery time depends on the type of surgery. Simple tooth extractions may take a few days, while more extensive procedures like dental implants could require a few weeks to a few months to fully heal. Swelling and discomfort are normal; applying ice packs helps. Eating soft foods and avoiding physical activity can speed up healing. Avoid smoking and alcohol, as these can impede recovery.
